A season after setting the NBA record with 73 wins in a regular season, Golden State became the first team in the four major professional sports leagues to go 15-0 in the postseason. SportsCenter noted it accomplished the feat with Wednesday’s 118-113 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 3 of the NBA Finals:
SportsCenter @SportsCenterNo team has ever gone 15-0 in any postseason of the four main professional sports... Until now. https://t.co/MQQWEJrSYA
The Warriors are now a single victory away from completing an incredible run through the postseason and becoming the first team in league history to go 16-0. After an entire offseason of jokes and reminders about blowing a 3-1 lead in last year's Finals, it would be a head-turning statement and secure this team's place in history.
Stephen Curry was ready to go for the undefeated mark after Wednesday's win, per Michael Grange of Rogers Sportsnet, "We want 16 wins, we don't care how, but now that we're here [16-0] let's take care of business."
He did still have his focus on the bigger picture of securing a championship, as did Draymond Green when he said Tuesday, "It doesn't matter," per Chris Haynes of ESPN.com. "It would be great, a great story. ... [But] if we were able to do that, I don't think when I talk about a championship I'd say we were the only team to go 16-0. I think I'd say we won a championship. That's all that matters."
Green is right about the championship being the only thing that truly matters, but the Warriors have the opportunity to firmly cement themselves in future discussions of the best teams in NBA history with a sweep of Cleveland on Friday.
After all, this is still the same core that won the 73 games last season only with the addition of the 2013-14 MVP Kevin Durant. A 16-0 mark in the playoffs would be a fitting way to remember such a loaded squad.
